Deadly Rain

Acid rain is normal rain to begin with; the kind rain people once loved singing in. When water vapor combines with pollutants in the air and reaches a pH level less then 5.6, it turns deadly, into acid rain. Acid rain is responsible for many of the serious environmental problems. It is the very thing that one-day may kill us all.
When factories burn coal and oil, which contain large amounts of sulfur, sulfur dioxide is formed. The exhaust from gasoline-powered vehicles contains nitric oxide. When sunlight strikes nitric oxide in the air, it is combined with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide. Both sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide dissolve in water to form strong acids. Sulfur dioxide forms sulfuric acid and nitrogen dioxide forms nitric acid. When these acids come down to earth they harm forests, lakes, animals, humans and stone structures.
