Teaching Machines
Machines play a critical role in men’s lives. They are a study in contrasts. On the one hand, they can advance the quality of life. On the other, they can cause unforeseen problems for their users. A prime example of this is the incredible flying machine. Airplanes liberated people and allowed them to explore faraway places. Air travel cost more but saved time. Unfortunately, planes can be deadly. Not only can they crash, they can be weapons of mass destruction. In Dandelion Wine, the Happiness and Green Machines highlight the negative aspects, while the Time Machine highlights the positive.
On a ludicrous proposal from Grandpa Spaulding and Douglas, Leo Auffmann decides to undertake the building of a Happiness Machine, but he finds that it only threatens the real happiness in his life—his family. Although happiness is ubiquitous and intangible, discovering it can prove elusive. The puzzle of happiness is not solved within the realm of inventions...
