Cyrix Microprocessors

A few years ago Cyrix had the lead in microprocessor speed at the 233 MHz frequency according to PCTODAY.com. But when it came to new technology like migrating from Socket 7 Architecture to SLOT 1, Intel had the lead. Cyrix was targeting the lower-end PC market with inexpensive prices. At the 233 MHz level, Cyrix outperformed Intel and AMD on the same Windows 95 or Windows NT platforms. On September 3, 1999, National Semiconductor Corporation announced it completed the sale of the assets of the Cyrix standalone PC processor business to VIA Technologies. Soon after, there were no more Cyrix chips on the market. This paper will examine the two largest chipmakers, AMD and Intel.
