Customs do not guarantee life forever

The short story, “The Lottery” is a real shocker. The harsh and cruel ending, grabs attention and adds to the unique way of hiding its true intentions. It is a story/movie full of irony and symbolism. The author, Shirley Jackson is trying to satirize our own society, in which men are selected for the army by lottery.
The setting of the event in “The Lottery” is a very effective trick. It tricks the reader from the real truth and instead positions his or her mind to a happy surrounding. “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the warmth of a fine summer day.” Who would have thought that the clean innocence of a fine summer day would...
