Cults

Understanding why people join cults is a very difficult task. Most people who have never experienced a cult simply shake their head and say, “You’d never catch me falling for something so stupid.” So what is it that draws so many people into these groups and what is it that makes them so appealing and attractive?
To begin, we must answer the question, what is a cult? “It is a religious group with a very distinct theological view from the dominant religion in a country or society” (Hill,16). According to the dictionary, it is a religion or religious sect that is generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader. Some people may have their own images of what a cult is or is like.
