Cuba: The Socialist paradise

The island of Cuba has had a colourful history of civil war, revolt and economic annexation. The most famed historical event was the overthrow of the Batista government by revolution leader Fidel Castro. Fidel Castro political career started as a lawyer inspired by social reform for the Cuban people, however peaceful means for change did not succeed. (CNN)

As a revolutionary, Fidel Castro managed to lead several unsuccessful attacks on the Batista government. Only on December 31st 1959 was his movement successful, which soon after he took political responsibility as Premier in February 1960. (CNN)

Soon after Castro took power of Cuba; he instituted trade agreements with the Soviet Union to buy oil. Cuba began to reform by seizing all United States owned property on Cuban land (with the exception of the Guantamano Bay Naval Base) and initiated trade agreements with other communist nations.
