Crystalline Columns

The Synthesis of Copper Sulphide

1) Purpose:
How will the elements react? How will the compound they form react?

2) Hypothesis:
If the elements and compound react, then the elements will have to be a mixed powder and it will have to be heated because it is difficult for solids to react.

3) Safety Precautions:
Wear safety spectacles.
Be able to access fume hood.
Allow tube to cool completely after heating it to prevent burning.

4) Procedure:
Mix 1 g of powdered sulphur and 2 g of copper. Fix a balloon on the end of the tube and weigh the mixture. Gently heat the solution until it starts to glow. Let the tube cool and then reweigh it. Remove the balloon, empty out the substance and observe it.
