Mathilde Loisel is a pretty, yet, ordinary housewife who is married to a kind man of modest means. Mathilde believes she is destined for finer things and is disgusted by poverty and plainness. When her husband arrives home with an invitation to a prestigious gathering she aspires to be the most beautiful and envied women at the ball.
