Critical Response of "The Necklace", By Guy De Maupassant

The short story, "The Necklace", by Guy De Maupassant tells the story of a woman

who is unsatisfied with her position in life. Mathilde Loisel is a pretty, yet, ordinary

housewife who is married to a kind man of modest means. Mathilde believes she

is destined for finer things and is disgusted by poverty and plainness. When her

husband arrives home with an invitation to a prestigious gathering she aspires to be the

most beautiful and envied women at the ball. Mr. Loisel gives her his savings so she

can buy a gown beautiful enough to suit her, yet she still must have some jewelry to

wear with the gown. She borrows a beautiful diamond necklace from her rich friend,
