When the evidence lies; Joyce Gilchrist helped send dozens to death row. The forensic scientist’s errors have put capital punishment under the microscope. The question everyone wants to know of course is, was this simply human error or a horrible misjudgment. Had she become someone who was addicted to the congratulation and the job well done - pat on the back, so to speak, and decided to keep them coming be creating her own evidence. Or was it a system of justice letting us down? Most of her evidence for conviction was based on small samples for hair comparison. Which in the eighty’s there wasn’t much you could do with hair but compare it under a compound microscope – and say yup, it’s similar!!? How could we have possibly convicted someone with similar appearance and texture in hair evidence, it just doesn’t add up. (Hewitt, People; Brown, Associated Press)
