Crime and Deviance

Deviance is defined as an act which does not follow the norms and expectations
of a particular group. Deviance maybe positively sanctioned (rewarded), negatively sanctioned (punished) or simply accepted without reward or punishment.

Crime refers to those activities that break the law of the land and are subject to official punishment.


Types of crime

One way of differentiating crimes is to distinguish between crimes against people and crimes against property. Crimes against people (or violent crimes) involve the threat of injury, or threat (or use) of force, against victims. Violent crimes include four major types:

1. Murder and non-negligent homicide (all willful homicides as
distinguished from deaths caused by negligence, suicide, accident,
and so on);

2. Forcible rape(including assault to rape, threat of force, and
