Courts in the American Legal System

Though no formal system of law was developed centuries ago, justice was still served. It may have been through banishment, shunning, or even death. But as times changed and societies developed, so did the courts in the American legal system.
There are many types of courts in the United States, each with its own purpose and jurisdiction. Each making a difference in a person?s life, each changing history. Of all the courts, The U.S. Supreme Court is the highest court in the United States. The U.S. Supreme Court was not formally established until passage of the judiciary Act of 1789. It consists of nine justices that has jurisdiction to review, by appeal or writ of certiorari, the decision of lower federal courts and the highest courts of each state. It is free to accept or reject the cases it will hear. However, it must hear certain rare mandatory appeals and cases within its original jurisdictions as specified by the Constitution.
