Corruption Of Wealth

The theme of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is the corruption of wealth. Wealth can alter one’s perception of true happiness as it does in this novel. Fitzgerald portrays his theme of the corruption of wealth through the characters of Tom, Daisy, and Jordan.
Tom’s wealth has made him racist, sexist, hypocritical, and self-centered. When Tom and Daisy have Nick over for tea for the first time Tom talks about a book called The Rise of the Coloured Empires. “It’s up to us who are the dominant race to watch out or these other races will have control of things.” Tom’s views are also laced with sexism. He sees Daisy as lower than himself even though she is just as wealthy and well educated. Tom is also a very hypocritical person.
