Today’s correctional officer, also known as a detention officer, has one of the most important jobs in the division of Prisons. They maintain order within the institution and enforce the rules and regulations.(Careers in Correction 1) An important part of the correctional officers job is to prepare offenders for return to society. As the number of prisons and inmates grow so has the job of a correctional officer. In short, correctional staff maintain the public safety of the risks and difficulties.
There are certain requirements needed to become a correctional officer. Most institutions require correctional officers to be at least 18-21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. A high school education or its equivalent such as a GED is needed.
