Construction of the Feminine Persona

The characteristics that determine whether a person is either male or female are not restricted to only biological differences, but are also established by socially constructed roles. "Gender" is used to refer to the way a culture redefines what begins as a fact of nature. The perception of males and females are formed, represented, valued, and concentrated into different roles by society. The way a society defines gender is an example of social construction because it is a product of social interactions that define the way people walk, talk, and dress. Social constructed ideas are in turn taught and passed down through society through socialization. Norms and values that define men women are not merely limited to face –to-face interaction, but are created in establishments such as the economy, political system, educational system, religions, and family units as well (Appelbaum, R., Duneir, M., & Giddens, A., 2003).
