Ways to Resolve Conflict
Conflict is the competition between interdependent parties who perceive they have incompatible needs, goals, desires, or ideas. This is a situation in which they cannot agree with one another. The elements of competition, interdependence, and perceived incompatibility provide a foundation for understanding the nature of conflict. As the pace of life and business continues to accelerate, the chances of conflict multiply. Yet, the ability to work well with others is a great determinant in everyday life. Therefore, learning to lighten and defuse confrontational situations and people is essential.
Different types of conflict exist. The Oregon Mediation Center, Inc. defines five categories of conflict – relationship, data, interest, structural and value (Mediation Center, para. 1).
