What is a computer Virus?

A computer virus is a program written and created to affect your computer by altering the way it works. They are hidden in your files and spread rapidly throughout your computer from one file to another.

Viruses display messages on the screen and/or plays tricks with your desktop display. Other viruses can do even more damage. For example, some viruses make many copies of themselves, using up system resources and slowing down tasks. These are often referred to as worms.

Viruses can hide in such files as Microsoft Word documents or Excel spread sheets. When these programs are opened they cause the virus to start its work. The virus then multiplies by infecting document templates, so causing all the new files that are created with the program to have the virus too.
