COMPULSIVE OR PATHOLOGICAL GAMBLING AND DEPRESSION

"Pathological or Compulsive gambling is when a person is preoccupied with gambling and is unable to stop, and gambles as a way to escape from problems; it is the inability to resist impulses to gamble, leading to severe personal or social consequences." (Davison & Neal, 2001, p. 19) This behavior usually develops from occasional to habitual gambling. It is said that "the urge to gamble becomes so great that more gambling is the only thing that can relieve the tension that is brought on by the urge to gamble." As time goes by, it seems that higher stakes and personal risks become involved. Pathological gamblers also tend to neglect their other interests, family, and work. Pathological gambling can bring on major family issues, financial troubles (debt), and sometimes gamblers even turn to crime in order to support their habit. It almost seems like they are addicted to a drug. The cause for this behavior is unknown. Pathological gambling affects people of all sexes, races, and ages.
