Nicanor Abelardo



(1893-1934)
Nicanor Abelardo wrote his first composition by age 8. He
learned to play the piano and guitar, and while he was a music
student at the University of the Philippines, he won first
prize for his "U.P. Beloved" song and was appointed head of the
conservatory's department of music. He was called the “father
of kundiman” because he wrote 149 kundiman. Some of his
famous kundiman are "Bituing Marikit", "Kundiman ng Luha,"
"Mutya Ng Pasig" and "Nasaan Ka Irog?". These kundimans later
became movie theme songs.
