Competition between metals

Sarah Belanger
Competition between metals

1) Purpose:
To obtain an order of reactivity of metals by investigating displacement reactions.

2) Hypothesis:
If a metal that is higher in the reactivity series displaces a metal lower in the reactivity series, then copper will be the least reactive because it is lower in the reactivity series than the other metals.

3) Safety Precautions:
Lead (II) nitrate solution is poisonous. Wash your hands at the end of the experiment.

4) Procedure:
Clean each metal with sand paper, and then add each metal to a solution. Leave the test-tube for 3 min and then scrape out each of the tubes.

5) Observations:
Magnesium sulphate Lead (II) nitrate Copper (II) sulphate Iron (II) sulphate Zinc sulphate
Magnesium + + + +
Lead - + - -
Copper - - - -
Iron - + + -
Zinc - + + +
+ = a reaction...
