The Two Poets: Ferlinghetti and Snyder

The Beat movement, a reaction to society by a generation that perceived itself as helpless and expressed a need for individualism despite a conformity in society, had a significant impact on two poets, Ferlinghetti and Snyder. Raised and educated during the World War II and the following Depression period, they wrote poems about their unique views and attitudes toward life. Lawrence Ferlinghetti¡¯s The Pennycandystore Beyond the El and Gary Snyder¡¯s Mid-August at Sourdough Mountain Lookout illustrate how they were influenced by the Beat movement, and how does it affect their poetic styles in term of recent American poetry, which pays special attention to voice, visual images, and place. Although there are many differences between their poetic styles, they both have a common factor that moved them as a poet: the unique perspective of life.
