Comparison and Contrast the poems “She Rose To His Requirement” and “From a correct Address in a Suburb of a Major City”

Work 1
Point 1
“She Rose to His Requirement” by Emily Dickinson depicts a woman who gets rid of her playful habits to become an honorable wife and do honorable work. In real life, Emily Dickinson never married and was influenced by two religions, Puritanism and Transcendentalism. Puritanism taught Emily Dickinson to remain grounded in her faith of God, while Transcendentalism allowed her to release herself from limiting conceptions of humanity, enabling her to view herself as an individual with an identity, and let her feel free. Under Puritanism, the traditional woman must marry and obey her husband; that is the duty of a wife. The idea of morality pervades all things. However, the Transcendentalism makes Emily express this woman’s marriage as a reluctant circumstance of life. The marriage restricts a woman’s freedom and the ability to be an individual. This woman accepts married life and obedience to her husband expressing calm and patience on the outside.
