Comparing Writing Styles

Although the short stories, The Scotty Who Knew Too Much, by James Thurber, and John Steinbeck’s Travels With Charley, seem similar at first glance, they both contain different aspects of literature, which makes their style of writing extremely opposite. Both writers, Thurber and Steinbeck, are early twentieth century writers who use animals and comedic relief in their stories. Both authors use the special technique of dramatic irony as well as exhibiting the same moral of being open minded in order to learn, however the writing styles of Thurber and Steinbeck are very contrasted. Through contradicting points of view, word choice and vocabulary, and sentence structure and syntax, the simple writing style of Thurber varies from the complex style of Steinbeck.
Steinbeck and Thurber use incompatible point of views to develop their stories. While Steinbeck uses the first person narrative as his writing style, Thurber develops his style of writing through the third person. In T...
