Compare the ways in which each author presents the issue of heroism in "The Handmaids Tale" and "The Crucible".

Heroes are the principal characters in a book, play or film who are greatly admired for their exceptional qualities or achievements. Heroic qualities can be displayed in different ways, whether it is physical strength or intellectual. This becomes apparent in Arthur Millers “The Crucible” and Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” as the issue of Heroism is portrayed in two very different ways. Both texts tell the story of a theocratic society run by religious fundamentalists. They each focus on one character and tell us about how they cope or struggle in a repressive society and how they maintain their personal identity. Each hero is responding to different problems within their society.
