Devices used in the home controlled by microchips, are called embedded machines, because their chip only has to perform required tasks, not like a computer. Thus clocks, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, video recorders, television and hi-fi sets can be programmed, for example, to start at a particular time, or to stop. This is something that could not be done before. In the case of television and hi-fis, they can also be remote-controlled. Devices controlled by microchips are better, because they are faster and more efficient. They make the home easier to run and give it the feeling of luxury. Although they can make us lazier, in that they do most of the work for us, they are luxuries, which are taking the place of their older counterparts...
