Comment on the role played by the chorus.

According to Aristotle's theory of tragedy, "the function of the chorus is to comment on the action and sometimes to narrate events". Sophocles, presents the Chorus as having a number of roles and functions. It comments on the events and points out the significance of what is happening, it indicates the passing of time and clarifies the thoughts and feelings of characters. Through these roles and functions, Sophocles shows that the Chorus represents society and the voice of morality, therefore we as an audience appreciate, what appear to be Sophocles’ values.

Sophocles, in Oedipus the King, presents the major role of the Chorus as that of a commentator. The chorus clarifies the situation to the audience in a way that enables the audience to fully comprehend the nature and flow of the plot. For example, at the end of the play, when Creon's final words have been uttered, the Chorus comments on the fate of Oedipus by saying
Now as we keep our watch and wait the final day,
...
