Colosseum Scale and Articulation

Discuss three ways in which the scale and articulation of the Colosseum gave meaning to the building in the context of Imperial Rome.

The Colosseum was commissioned as a symbol of Rome, confirming the wealth and power and might of Rome, and the Imperial Roman Empire to both the outside world and citizens of Rome. The scale and articulation reinforced the magnificence of the amphitheatre and viewed with wonder and awe.

The scale and design of the five tiers used for the seating made from concrete and stone ¹ varied in size and design, demonstrating social structure and hierarchy within Rome.
