Cognitive Dissonance Theory, An Effective and Useful Theory

Abstract

The following research paper examines Lester Festinger’s communication theory, cognitive dissonance. The paper will inform the reader what a theory is and what the five criteria, communication expert, Stephen W. Littlejohn; claims should be met to create a good theory.
I will first review the history of how the theory was founded. Then I will then define and explain the theory. After defining and the theory I will briefly discuss the studies that are behind the theory and the research that has been generated because of theory. In conclusion, the everyday uses, future and criticism of the theory will be addressed. By reviewing the cognitive dissonance theory in depth, I will present why the theory embodies Littlejohn’s criteria for what a good theory should contain.
