Codependency and Adult Children of Alcoholics

This paper is written out of personal experience and with the help of a whole entourage of books that I have used as assistance and guidance throughout the years. It is my goal to explain the causes and characteristics of codependency and the symptoms of Adults Children of Alcoholics (ACA) and how they interrelate. I have chosen to write a paper primarily on codependency in regards to ACA for the simple reason that I believe that they are very much interconnected, one resulting from another.
Codependency can be defined as “A addiction to people, behaviors, or things”. Codependent people are often emotionally involved with addicts who are addicted to themselves and other people, not just to alcohol or drugs, but also to sex, food, work, or shopping.
Alcoholism is defined as a disease by the American Medical Association. A disease is a condition that is described as chronic and if left untreated will eventually lead to death.
