Cloudstreet by Australian Author Tim Winton is most certainly a novel about loss and gain. Winton incorporates a stream of incidences that involve both loss and gain. It is these incidences that are the backbone of the novels plot. Within Cloudstreet both loss and gain are clearly shown through many scenarios often involving death and birth, money, hope, and moving. Almost the entire plot of the novel Cloudstreet surrounds these four topics resulting in a large majority of Cloudstreet focusing on both loss and gain.





The divided house on Cloudstreet is a physical symbol representing the fact that the Pickles and the Lambs are two contrasting families. One major difference is that one family believes in faith, whilst the other family literally revolves around “the hairy hand of god” other wise known as “lady luck”.
