Clone Horses

“First Cloned Horse Created in Italy”
Scientists are hoping that horse cloning may become not only useful for racehorses, but for repopulating endangered breeds of horses that are too wild for artificial insemination.
Born in Cremona, Italy, on May 28th, at 1:45am, was Prometea. She was standing up and nursing in less than an hour after her birth, just like any other foal. But Prometea is different in one major way: she is a clone.
Prometea was the only foal to survive out of 841 embryos. All but 24 of these embryos died in the lab dishes during the first week. Seventeen embryos were transferred into the wombs of surrogate mothers, four of which resulted in pregnancies. One was aborted after 6 months, and two died within the first thirty days. And then there was Prometea, who survived the full term. Some people may say that having only one horse survive out of what could have been 841 is a waste, and not a very big accomplishment.
