Classics, Cupid and psyche

Question:

Did Cupid want psyche for her beauty and qualities, or did he want her in spite of his mother who despised her?.



Throughout "Cupid and Psyche" the central theme is jealousy and how it can effect and manipulate an individuals motivations and ideals. On one hand jealousy can be a sign of ones love for another and on the contrary can be a sign of weakness in the one who possesses it. Oddly enough, neither Cupid nor Psyche possess jealousy. This is interesting considering the amount of the story devoted to this theme. The secondary theme poses the question stated above. Was it spite toward his mother that caused Cupid to pursue Psyche?, did he want Psyche because he knew Psyche's jealous sisters and his jealous mother wanted her demise?. Did Cupid feel real love for Psyche or was he motivated by something other than love?. Was it really love that caused an immortal god to be so drawn to a beautif...
