Civil War Uniforms

Many different uniforms were worn during the Civil War. All officers in the federal army
wore a frock coat made out of dark cloth. The skirt extended down between the top of the
hip and the knee cap. Major Generals wore more buttons on each side of their coats. The
colonels and brigadier generals wore the same outfit as the major generals. Basically all
ranks wore the same uniform except there were different features on the coats of officers
of a higher rank.
All enlisted foot soldiers wore a single breasted frock coat that was made out of
dark blue cloth. They also wore a skirt that extended down below the hip area. There was
one row of nine buttons on the breast. They also wore a stand up collar. Collars and cuffs
had a small of piece of cloth on them. They different soldiers wore different colors.
Musicians wore the same thing as the other federal enlisted men. There were
minor details that were different on a musicians uniform.
