Civil War

After the civil war, the frontier kept expanding westward. The expansion spanned from central Texas to the bordering Canada. The land was filled with Indians, buffaloes, and unsettled land. In the 1890s, the land would be the four territories of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. About 360,000 Indians were in the west around 1860, and stood in the way of American settlers. The white settlers slowly dwindled food supplies and spread diseases that would hurt Indians overall. The federal government created treaties which were eventually broken and gave way to fighting.
At the end of the civil war, over 15 million buffalo roamed the plains. They crowded railroad tracks and were becoming a popular prey. Indians hunted them for everything they could be used for while white men killed them for choice cuts, tongues, and for spo...
