Cinematic Analysis of A Streetcar Named Desire

The first scene is of the streets of New Orleans. It is very crowded and bustling. There is a lot of smoke and confusion. We are introduced to the main character, Blanch, as she emerges from the smoke. The setting around her and the look on her face shows her fright and confusion. She takes a Streetcar to her sister’s house named Desire, this is where the title comes from.
The next scene is a bowling alley. There is good use of Foley sound as you hear the bowling balls rolling and pins being knocked down in the background. We are introduced to Stella, Blanch’s sister.
There is then contiguity editing from the bowling alley to Stella’s house. The setting is of a lower level apartment on the busy streets of New Orleans. The apartment seems run down and dingy, compared to Blanch.. There is very little lighting. There is flashes of light that come from the signs from the street.
