One thing I noticed about the first part of the book is how much the word “complacent” is important. It talks a lot about the complacency of man at that time in 1898 when the novel was written. H.G Wells may have talked about this because of the possible threat of European powers to the United Kingdom and he may have been concerned that he was aware of the threats from other countries, so we must also take into account that The War of the Worlds was written fourteen years before World War One, the threat being from Germany. He foresaw what was going to happen and wrote his novel not just as a story but possibly a political statement.

In chapter one Wells sates how people in his town just get on with everyday business, and how they are unaware of their own surroundings whereas he knows what is going on or what is going to happen.

“Few people realize the immensity of vacancy in which the dust of the material universe swims.”

An equivalent to what Wells is saying her...
