Children? Or Murderers?

In an FBI report in 1994 children under the age of eighteen were responsible for 17 percent of all homicides committed that year (Goodwin 14). Many argue that children are getting away with murder but because they commit adult crimes doesn’t mean that their minds comprehend things like an adult would. Children are just not capable of seeing the consequences of their actions. Not only do children not understand the consequences of their actions they are too young for adult prisons where they are, in most cases, introduced to rape and abuse. What children really need is rehabilita-tion; in these type environments, they can be nurtured and cared for as children not as felons or mur-derers. Children are not getting away with murder; they are being thrust into a world of adult re-sponsibility and abuse for which they are not ready.
