Walter Kirn is a well known author of Political Satire. He has published many articles criticizing American culture. He has voiced his opinion on some high profile issues, like the Monica Lewinsky scandal. In an article published in the Time South Pacific in 2001 entitled “What ever happened to PLAY?” Kirn had some interesting points about the developmental of playtime on children. This article was based on a lot more than personal opinion. He’s statements were well supported and researched.
Kirn’s main argument is that playtime in American society is gradually disappearing. Kirn is worried that the lack of leisure play among children will have a seriously negative affect on their learning and social development. He’s able to track this decline from studies done in the 80’s and completed studies in the new millennium. Kirn is able to offer additional solid evidence and even help the reader create several possible solutions.
