CHILD ABUSE

The term ‘child abuse’ refers to the violence, mistreatment or neglect that a child or adolescent may experience while in the care of someone he or she either trusts or depends on. This includes parents, siblings, other relatives, caregivers, or guardians. It can take place anywhere and also may occur within a child’s home or of someone’s that the child knows.
There are many forms of child abuse, and at a time, a child may be subjected to more than one form of child abuse. Physical abuse is a force used against the child in a way that the child gets injured or is at a risk of getting injured. It includes beating, hitting, shaking, pushing, choking, burning, kicking, or assaulting a child with a weapon; also, it can be holding a child under water. Sexual abuse or exploitation is when a child is used for sexual purposes. Acts of exploitation include fondling, rape, incest or involving a child in prostitution or pornography.
