Child Abuse
Child abuse refers to the physical of mental injury, sexual abuse, negligent treatment, or maltreatment of a child under the age of eighteen by a person who is responsible for the child’s welfare (Willis in Mooney, p130). The different forms of child abuse, discussed in class were physical, sexual, emotional, and neglect. All of which are equally destructive to a child’s welfare. Adolescents and adults who were abused as children are more vulnerable to low self-esteem, depression, unhappiness, anxiety, increased risk of substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, and suicide (Mooney, p131). Child abuse is an ongoing problem that is affecting many children around the world.
Physical abuse is the most dangerous form of child abuse because it can result in serious injury or even death. Children ranging from infants to two years of age are the most at risk for death.
