Title: Heats of Reaction
Date: October 27, 2003
Purpose: Determine heats of reaction of three related exothermic reactions.
Procedure:
Part I
1. Pour 100 mL of distilled water into a clean, dry Styrofoam cup and measure the temperature as To
2. Measure out 1.81 g of KOH on the balance
3. Add the KOH pellets into the cup. Record the temperature as Tf.
Part II
1. Measure out 50 mL of 1.0 M HCl and pour it into the Styrofoam cup. Record temperature as To.
2. Add 50 mL of 1.0 M KOH solution to the HCl solution. Record the highest temperature as Tf
Part III
1. Measure out 100 mL of 0.5 M HCl and pour it in the Styrofoam cup.
2. Measure out 2.81 g of KOH crystals
3. Measure the temperature of the acid in the cup. Record it as To.
4. Add the KOH pellets to the acid and stir the mixture with the thermometer. Record the highest temperature as Tf.

Result:

Part I
Mass of 100.0 mL of water 100.0 g
Mass of KOH pellets 2.81 g
