Chemistry 101

*Chemistry 101*

Bonding
• Chemical Bond- a link between atoms as a result of the mutual attraction of their nuclei for electrons.
• Valence Electrons- the outer shell electrons available for bonding.

Types
Ionic- Virtual transfer of electrons from 1 atom to another, held together by opposite charge.
Example:

Covalent- POLAR, unequal sharing
Example:

NONPOLAR, equal sharing
Example:

Metallic- Relatively loose association of electrons in metal.

*Chemical bonds in dissimilar atoms are rarely completely ionic and never completely covalent.
