I. Charles Bukowski, his life and works

Charles Bukowski was born in Germany in 1920,but his family emigrated to the United States in 1922 and settled in Los Angeles,where Bukowski spent a lot of his life.His father was in and out of work during the Depression years, regularly beating the boy.Later Bukowski depicted his childhood in Ham on rye (1982).He described there his father as a cruel, shiny bastard with bad breath.His father died in the year 1958.Bukowski wanted to shield himself from his despotic father, he started to experiment with alcohol in his youth.During school years he read widely, he was interessed in Upton Sinclair´s Main street, Ernest Hemingway´s Nick Adams stories, Carson McCullers and D.H.Lawrence ( many of ...
