Lorene Cary, an African American girl in Black Ice is non-athletic, a coward, afraid of trying new things and too quick to judge.
In the first scene we meet Fumiko, a Japanese girl. On the way to soccer practice, Fumiko asks Lorene if she likes to play basketball. Lorene replies “no”. Fumiko tells Lorene that she use to play basketball all the time in Japan and if Lorene would like she would teach her how to play. Lorene though would rather sit out and watch Fumiko play...
