In this chapter we are introduced to guidelines that an artist might follow when he/she set out to do a composition. In this chapter they defined five major principles of design. The principles of design discussed are unity and variety, balance, emphasis and subordination, scale and proportion, and rhythm.
The first principles of design are unity and variety. In unity the artist is looking to establish a constant. He/she may repeat a form or shapes. To achieve variety the artist might make the constant in a different color. This unity and variety make the work coherent and interesting.
