In the book That Was Then, This Is Now, by S.E. Hinton, change is expressed through two boys, Mark and Bryon. Mark and Bryon are as close to each other as brothers. They have their ups and their downs like any other friendship, but one day Mark surprises Bryon in a way that could ruin their relationship forever. Mark has been selling drugs for extra money. Not liking this at all, Bryon turns his best friend into the police for Mark’s wrong doings. Thus, through this one experience of change, Bryon proves to himself and others that although they have a very tight relationship, change is inevitable. When circumstances of life change, people’s lives are affected. There are many instances of exactly that in That Was Then, This Is Now. For example, when Charlie, one of Mark’s and Bryon’s close, older friends, dies, Mark and Bryon loses a dear friend and role mod...
