Changes of the asylum legislation in Great Britain

Since the murder of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 the asylum legislation has been changed many times.

1998: The British government planned a revision for people who had been waiting for the acceptance of their asylum application. Asylum seekers who have been living in Great Britain for more than five years got an unlimited residence permit. People who applied for asylum between 1993 and 1995 are allowed to stay in Great Britain for further four years, if they have got family in Great Britain or if they can prove a charitable activity. In the future asylum seekers should get a home in pensions or private accommodations within the whole country, but they still won‘t be allowed to work.

1999: The British government announced a set of reforms in the asylum legislation in August 1999. The number of asylum seekers had increased seriously. In the first six months of this year approx. 30,000 applications for political asylum were made.
