In 1665, an English scientist and inventor Robert Hooke discovered cells. He constructed his own better compound microscope than the ones there were available at these days. He took a piece of cork and carefully cut a thin slice and examined it under a microscope. He discovered that the cork had tiny pores like “honey comb units” which he described as “cells” meaning “little rooms” or “boxes”. The word “cell” did not take on its now-existing meaning for almost 200 years.
