There was silence in the tent. My eyes roamed around the circle of teenagers over the five cards I clutched protectively to myself. My friend Martin sighed and put down his cards.
“A pair,” he muttered.
All eyes turned to Cathy. She also put down her cards, but triumphantly.
“I got 2 pairs! Beat that!”
I graced the room with a sardonic grin.
“2 pairs. Very good. But not quite good enough.” I slammed my cards down on the ground. “1 three, ladies and gentlemen.” I reached for the pile of matchsticks in the middle gleefully.
