Sometimes a novel can change your view of a major issue or political problem of our time by giving you a fresh insight into it. Did Cal change your views in any way? The novel Cal written by Bernard MacLaverty gives a brief insight into the Catholic-Protestants conflict that exists in present-day Northern Ireland. The story follows a young man Cal, a confused 19-year Old Catholic boy living in a Protestant residential area of town in Northern Ireland. The story is tragic and touching and Bernard MacLaverty manages to make a moving novel out of the complexities of Northern Ireland through Cal’s perspective.
