Australian society has changed much thanks to multiculturalism. We have benefited much from the things that migrants have introduced and the changes that have occurred because of them. I will talk about the situation in the 1950’s, then about multiculturalism today.

In the 1950’s, Australia was not a multicultural country but it started to become one when thousands migrants flooded the shores of Australia after World War II. A program was started by the government to encourage homeless people from war torn mainland European countries like France to move to Australia and take up residence. Later on, any person from Europe who met the requirements could move to Australia. They also came because rapid industrialisation meant that there was a great demand for unskilled labour in new factories, industries and civil engineering projects starting in Australia.
